Veterans' Roundtable: American Legion Post #43 to hold annual Fall Open House

American Legion Post #43 is holding its Fall Open House on Sunday, September 10, from 1-4 p.m. This yearly event is designed to connect veterans with our local community and allow the Lenoir citizens to view our facility.

Members of the community are invited to visit with our crafters, vendors, food trucks, direct sales people, and small business operators. Anyone may become a vendor, and it is free to have a table and sell at this event.

A chance to win a door prize will be offered to those who attend. Vendors are also encouraged to register for the free vendor drawings. Post #43 is located at 300 North McLewean, Kinston, NC, and further information is available by contacting ENCECA.1@gmail.com.

Post #43 is named after World War I soldier Joseph Dixon Roundtree, who was killed in France. Although he is buried in France, there is a headstone in his honor in the local cemetery downtown.

The history of veterans is the history of US. As our veterans age and we lose so many through death, it more important than ever that we capture our histories and tell our stories to share with the next generation.

During his visit to the G.I. Joe History Museum, Representative Greg Murphy emphasized the importance of veterans telling their stories and having those stories placed in the National Archives for future generations.

If you are a veteran who would like to tell your story, reach out to your local veterans organizations to be heard. Those who are interested in more information may visit the Veterans History Project online: https://www.loc.gov/programs/veterans-history-project/about-this-program/.
Many local veterans are represented in SALUTE’s GI Joes History Museum: https://www.salute-gijoes.org/museum/. The museum is located at  1165b NC-11, in Kinston. It is open from 9-4, Tuesday through Saturday. Visitors can learn more about the history of Lenoir veterans who served in the U.S. military. Admission is free.
