Damien Locklear's Departure from Kinston Fire Department

After a distinguished tenure with the Kinston Fire Department, Damien Locklear, the former Fire Chief, has officially concluded his service in Kinston. His last day of service in Kinston will be December 29th

“Chief Locklear has lead our Fire Department with professionalism and integrity,” said Kinston City Manager Rhonda Barwick. “He will be greatly missed by all who have worked with him.  We wish him much success in New Bern.”

In November 2018, Damien Locklear was named the new Fire Chief for the City of Kinston, set to take over the Fire Department on January 2, 2019. He succeeded Chief Don Crawford, who retired after 32 years of dedicated service.

The City of New Bern announced Damien Locklear as its new Fire Chief, marking the next step in his career. He had previously served as the Fire Chief in Kinston. Locklear's transition to New Bern commenced on January 8, 2024, with a formal introduction at the Board of Aldermen meeting on January 9, 2024.

His selection for the role followed a competitive process, with 86 applicants considered. Locklear's extensive experience, education, and leadership in the fire service across central and eastern North Carolina made him stand out. He brought a strong foundation in emergency management and response, along with a host of certifications and qualifications.

“I will begin the recruitment for a new Fire Chief in the coming days,” said Barwick.
