Senator Perry elevated to Chairman of Finance Committee
Raleigh, N.C. – Senator Jim Perry (R-Lenoir) has been appointed as Chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee for the 2023-24 legislative biennium, by Senate President Pro Tempore, Phil Berger. The Finance Committee is responsible for developing tax policy and revenue proposals that are projected to provide sufficient financing for the State's obligations. Proposed legislation from other committees that have any type of tax, or fee, must pass through this committee.
The three co Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee all serve in Senate Leadership. Perry, who serves as the Majority Whip, is joined by Senate Majority Leader Paul Newton (R - Cabarrus) and Senate Rules Chairman Bill Rabon (R - Brunswick).
Senator Perry offered the following statement: “I am humbled to be trusted with this level of responsibility for the citizens of our State. I look forward to working with my colleagues in both chambers to advance tax policy that builds on our proven path of success. Our pro growth, pro taxpayer policies have produced tremendous results for North Carolina.
In my opinion, the ability to decide how to spend your own money is one of the basic building blocks of freedom and I want our citizens to keep more of their own money. It will require focus, but I eventually would like to see North Carolina join the ranks of states that do not have a state income tax.”
Perry has a background in finance and accounting, having earned an MBA from Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. He is also a graduate of both North Carolina State University, and Lenoir Community College. He is a first generation college graduate.
Senator Perry also serves on the following committees: Commerce and Insurance, Health Care, Rules and Operations of the Senate, Redistricting and Elections and the Joint Commission on Governmental Operations.
