Letter to the Editor: The success of our community begins with Lenoir County Public Schools
The success of our community begins with Lenoir County Public Schools (LCPS) and the upcoming election is an opportunity for voters to extend LCPS’s capacity for success well beyond the current trajectory. LCPS needs its Board of Education (BOE) members to be standard bearers for the necessary partnerships between teachers, parents/guardians, administrators, and county commissioners required for identifying and obtaining the resources for meeting LCPS’s achievement goals.
As demonstrated throughout the pandemic, this is not the leadership being provided by the majority of BOE members. We witnessed the controlling majority’s blindside vote against the administrative team’s school reopen plan in 2020, violations of parents’ rights to make education and health choices for their children, and their dismissive, even disdainful, responses to anyone highlighting the negative impacts of their decisions.
Given this string of inexplicable actions, among others, we should all be wondering where LCPS might be with a majority of BOE members collaboratively working with its administrative team and constructively engaging with the community it serves.
Children deserve our dedication and determination to provide educational opportunities and environments that maximize their potential for success as students, as well as in life and careers. Parents have the right to expect accessibility and responsiveness from BOE members when concerns arise.
These beliefs have driven my efforts since mid-2020 to increase community awareness of BOE actions and to enhance productive communication among LCPS stakeholders. I hope to continue supporting the LCPS community as a new Board of Education member and invite you to visit my website at www.votejonathanbritt.com as part of your candidate research.
I want our community and its students to be successful and as a parent of two current LCPS students and husband of a LCPS teacher, I care deeply about the success of LCPS. The combination of my career experience working with utility industry boards, performing organizational risk assessments, strategic planning, local government budgeting, and work in education advocacy uniquely qualify me to serve as a Board of Education member.
I can contribute to a more effective school system for our county, but to do this I need your vote. Please vote Jonathan Britt for the Lenoir County Board of Education - District 5 seat.
