Job Description: Performs difficult skilled technical and intermediate administrative work supervising and participating in the work of crews involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical distribution lines, street lights, traffic signals, fire alarms and related installations, and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Electric Line Operation Supervisor and Electric Systems Superintendent. Full supervision is exercised over assigned crew members. Essential Functions: Supervises and participates in the work of power line crews engaged in the construction, maintenance and repair of electric distribution lines. Directs crews in changing out distribution lines, setting poles and moving cross arms, wires, transformers and related equipment. Supervises the construction of new extensions and underground distribution facilities. Troubleshoots power outages and voltage problems. Uses mapped instructions to ascertain layout, design and type of equipment to be employed. Meets with customers and contractors in planning new installations.

Oversees the hanging of new stop lights and street lights, directs wiring operations and makes operational checks to ensure lights are working properly. Locates and marks underground voltage conductors for customers. Repairs underground faulted conductors. Provides customer service locates for new or change out meterback services. Performs the more difficult and technical tasks on the job site when necessary. Does routine and special maintenance work such as checking lines for wear, repairing damaged facilities and replacing defective equipment. Supervises the building of transformer banks. Directs the construction of platforms and the installation of wiring and hook-up of transformers. Assists in the recruitment and selection process. Recommends candidates for hire.. Trains new employees; conducts employee evaluations; recommends salary increases, disciplinary action and terminations. Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and extensive experience electric line work including considerable supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of the techniques, tools, materials and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of electric distribution facilities. Thorough knowledge of the layout of existing distribution lines. Thorough knowledge of the principles of electricity, the hazards connected with the work, the tools and equipment connected with the work and the necessary safety precautions. Ability to perform manual work and physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions; ability to plan and supervise the work of crews. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Possession of first aid and CPR certifications. Completion of Lineman Career Development Program at Journeyman level. Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.

Physical Demands: This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently walking and speaking or hearing and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g.. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
