United Healthcare donates 10 computers to Neuse Regional Library

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan donated 10 computers to the Neuse Regional Library for the Literacy Without Barriers Homework Help program. Free afterschool tutoring is available at local area branches in Lenoir, Greene, and Jones counties that offers homework help, and tutoring in math, reading, and writing by teachers and volunteers.

“With the pandemic creating unique learning experiences and a greater need for computer access for students, it is important that we support the technology needs of afterschool tutoring programs like Literacy Without Barriers,” said Anita Bachmann, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of North Carolina.

The tutoring program is designed to prepare children for success in school and future life experiences. Tutoring sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:30 to 6:00 pm at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library.

“Ten computers were donated to us. We’ll be keeping four here at the Kinston Library, two will be going to the La Grange public library, and two at the Greene County Public Library, and one each in Jones County at the Pollocksville Public Library and the Trenton Public Library,” said Amber Hargett, head of extension at Neuse Regional Library.

The Kinston-Lenoir County Friends partnered with UnitedHealthcare to help them achieve their goal to serve kids in the region. Students will utilize the computers during “homework help” sessions to complete assignments and assessments using IXL.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library to address literacy and education needs of area young people with this computer donation,” said Bachmann.

Homework help is available at the five locations that will receive the computers. COVID-19 restrictions are in place for participants. Masks are required and temperature checks are done upon entry and social distancing is practiced. For more information on the Homework Help program, please visit https://www.neuselibrary.org/.
