Updated: Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro-Wayne to build one new home with a disaster-impacted family

In partnership with NC Office of State budget & Management, Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro-Wayne will build one new home with a recent disaster-impacted family. Interested parties must currently live or work in Lenoir, Greene, or Jones counties and were impacted by Hurricane Matthew, Florence, Michael, or Dorian with a verifiable FEMA number or verifiable attestation of impact.

“Habitat has been around as an organization, international organization since the 70s. We've been in Goldsboro since 2001,” said Matthew Whittle, the executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro-Wayne. Habitat for Humanity in Goldsboro has built over 80 homes for their community.

The future home will be located at 925 McCaskill Drive in Kinston.

“We are in the process of looking for applicants,” said Whittle.

Applicants must have a housing need that could be conditions that pose a health or safety risk, overcrowded, in Government-subsidized housing, or pay more than 30% gross income in rent. They will also have to meet income guidelines, have a low debt-to-income ratio, have stable income for the last 12 months, and have not declared bankruptcy in the last 24 months. A positive rental history is required, and they should not have excessive bills in collection.

“We're given the opportunity by the governor's Office of State Budget and Management to come over and participate with him in a disaster relief project,” said Whittle.

Per their website, Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat works toward their vision by building strength, stability and self-reliance in partnership with families in need of decent and affordable housing. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.

Interested parties can find the online application at www.habitatgoldsboro.org, specifically, https://habitatgoldsboro.org/habitat-homes/own-a-habitat-home/apply-for-lenoir-county-habitat-homeownership.html to apply.
