Help wanted: Lenoir County Sheriff's Office - Permanent/Full-Time Detention Officer

ENTRY SALARY: $26,672.88

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Performs professional work in county detention center, assuring safety and security of inmates in assigned areas of the Sheriff’s Detention Facility. Employee is expected to be alert, tact and firm while performing work in accordance with specific instructions, policies and directions set forth by office.

Employee serves as a member of assigned shift of personnel and answer to higher ranking supervisors. Work is performed under direct and general supervision of higher-ranking personnel and standard operating procedures.

Employees are subject to usual hazards associated with law enforcement including exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons, loud noises, inside and outside work environment, hot and cold weather. Work may expose the employee to human blood or body fluids and thus the job is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Admits prisoners to the County Jail. Performs necessary administrative work including use of camera, computers, internal records systems. Performs search of inmates, property, cells and other locations. Inspects areas for cleanliness and sanitation.

Enforces rules and laws to inmates. Routinely patrols areas occupied by inmates for inspection and accountability. Transport prisoners internally from different operational areas.

Ability to maintain discipline and order in detention center.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.

Ability to take prompt and effective action in jail emergencies.

Ability to maintain courteous and tactful relationships with all persons you encounter including families of inmates, attorneys, ministers or other persons concerning the detention center.

Completes records, reports, and other information as required. Required to work rotating shifts of days and nights. Required to wear provided uniform and equipment. Performs any task as assigned by the Captain of Detention Center, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Corporal or other Administrative Officer.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be 21 years of age or older; Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; Must possess valid North Carolina Driver License or Identification; Must be able to meet minimum requirements set by NC Sheriff’s Education, Training and Standards Commission;

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must be able to complete Detention Officer Certification Course that will be provided to hired employees within one year of employment.

VISUAL ATTENTION, MENTAL CONCENTRATION AND MANIPULATIVE SKILLS: Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally. Must possess the visual acuity necessary to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and do extensive reading. Must possess manual dexterity to operate standard office, data entry, and computer equipment.
