Students come to Neuse News for job shadowing Thursday

Neuse News and Magic Mile Media had its first job shadowing students of the 2019-20 school year.

North Lenoir junior Carmen Madrazo and freshman Ashton Singleton chose the organizations Thursday, learning about how both Neuse News and Magic Mile Media operate. Madrazo, an exchange student from Zaragoza, Spain, said she has interest in the field and learned quite a bit from here experience.

“I have always liked to be a journalist and I like social media and marketing,” Madrazo said. “(I learned)  how to use (Facebook) for the business and (enjoyed) the conversation with the camera.”

Singleton said he has an interest in sports and appreciated the enthusiasm of Neuse News Publisher B.J. Murphy and Magic Mile Screenprinting Owner Brandon Potter.

“I learned that some of the people here are very interesting — they’re enthusiastic and the printing (press), I like the way it works,” Singleton said.

Jessica Shimer, the career development coordinator for Lenoir County Public Schools, said throughout the year students will go to different jobs across the area in order to learn about organizations in the fields they’re interested in. At North Lenoir, Marketing Teacher Ashley Heath has job shadowing as a requirement in her classroom.

“I t’s been an exciting day to the new school year,” Shimer said. “I know the students are going to take (the information) back, use it in the classroom and share what they’re learning. We’ve got them all over the county today — 29 came out for this first one — and I know more will be coming (this) way.”
