Pink Hill Elementary hoping to connect to $1,000 prize

Pink Hill Elementary School hopes to expand its beekeeping program with a $1,000 prize from U.S. Cellular that the school needs the public’s help to win.

Pink Hill Elementary School is hoping to qualify for a $1,000 award through the U.S. Cellular Community Connections campaign in order to bolster its beekeeping program and is asking for the public’s help before the early December deadline.

In order to help, supporters are asked to log on to Pink Hill Elementary page of the Community Connections site and complete a series of online actions designed to acquaint them with U.S. Cellular service. Each completed action accumulates points for Pink Hill. The school will receive the $1,000 prize if it collects 20,000 points by Dec. 4. On Friday, with 12 days to go, the school had just over 9,000 points.

The project that Pink Hill Elementary has labeled “Bee-utiful Dreamers!” aims to increase utilization of the beehives kept behind the school campus as part of its agricultural education program.

Here’s the school’s explanation of how it would use the $1,000:

“Our students at Pink Hill Elementary School have been introduced to the world of bees and the important role they play in the pollination process of agriculture. We have a beehive located behind our school campus.

We would like to purchase a camera to enable our students the opportunity of observing the bees ‘up close’ as they work through a live feed into our classrooms. We are also in need of purchasing additional bees and supplies for the honey production, such as glass honey jars, propane fogger, and foundation frames for the honeycombs.

We would like to reach the point of financially sustaining this educational experience through the profit of selling the honey that is produced by our bees.”
