Obituary: Dewey “Lynn” Pelletier

Dewey “Lynn” Pelletier passed away peacefully surrounded by family and his trusted canine companion “Little Bit” on Saturday, September 9, 2023. On Saturday, September 30, honoring his wishes, we will gather for his farewell dance and celebration of life from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at New South. A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at 2:00 p.m.

Obituary: Donna “Diane” Wilcox Ousnamer

Donna “Diane” Wilcox Ousnamer, 71, of Kinston passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at ECU Health. The family will be accepting friends from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Diane’s home located at 2726 St. John Circle followed by A Celebration of Life service that will be held at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Garner Funeral Home. Visitation will be held following the Celebration of Life.

Bariatric Basics: Obesity in America

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates 42.4% of adults have the diagnosis of obesity and 9.2% have severe obesity. In 2021, CDC ranked North Carolina 16th in overall obesity compared to the rest of the United States.  In 2022, 40.4% of adults in Lenoir County were clinically obese, 5% greater than the overall rate in North Carolina.   Lenoir County residents live in one of the epicenters of the obesity epidemic. 

Veterans' Roundtable: Montana Artist paints rose on POW/MIA chair for Recognition Day

Artist Linda Paluka flew in from Montana to paint the third white rose on the POW/MIA chair at the G.I. Joe Living History Museum. The white roses symbolize those North Carolina servicemembers missing in action in Vietnam who have been recovered. Frederick Hall, Bynum Price, and Edward Morgan were the three servicemembers whose roses were painted on the chair.

Pursuant to G.S. 115C-518 and 160A-269, the Lenoir County Board of Education hereby gives notice that it has received an offer to purchase the Teacher’s Memorial School property owned by the Lenoir County Board of Education.  The property’s street address is 500 Marcella Drive Kinston, NC 28501. The offer to purchase is in the amount of One Hundred Fifty-One Thousand Dollars ($151,000.00). Notice is hereby given that prior to September 28, 2023, at 4:00 PM, any person may raise the bid by not less than ten percent (10%) of the first one thousand dollars ($1000) and five percent (5%) of the remainder ($150,000). Therefore, the lowest acceptable upset bid is One Hundred Fifty-Eight Thousand Six Hundred Dollars ($158,600.00).

Obituary: Lewellyn Davis Bradshaw

Mrs. Lewellyn Davis Bradshaw, best known as “Lew”, passed away Monday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. Funeral services will be held graveside 11 AM Thursday, September 21st, at the Westview Cemetery with Reverend Glenn Hill officiating. The family will greet friends and extended relatives immediately following the service at the cemetery and other times at Mrs. Bradshaw’s residence.

Obituary: Judy Jernigan Fields

Judy Jernigan Fields passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 18, 2023. A Service of Love and Remembrance will be held in the chapel of Rouse Funeral Home on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 3:00 pm. Visitation will take place an hour prior to the service, 2:00 pm. Following the service, the family will receive friends at Judy’s home.
