North Lenoir teacher, South Lenoir student win state STEM recognition

A teacher at North Lenoir High School and a student at South Lenoir High School are winners of top awards presented annually by the North Carolina Science, Mathematics and Technology Center.

Science teacher Kayla Lane-Varnell is the 2024 winner of the Center’s Outstanding Educator Award in Science, Mathematics and Technology Education and Rachel Noble, known for her achievements in FFA

and the field of agricultural science, is winner of the Student Leadership Award in Science, Mathematics

and Technology Education.

Persistence puts South Lenoir students in line for college aid, earns state award

Reina Kinnaly knows she can be a nagger, but she is unapologetic. Her dogged pursuit of South Lenoir High School seniors this past school year and her insistence they complete the paperwork critical to securing college scholarships, grants and loans have earned the school an NC First in FAFSA Innovation Award from myFutureNC, one of six presented in the state for 2022.

42nd Library Quiz Bowl brings Parrott victory

This was the 42nd year that the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library staff has organized a Quiz Bowl competition for local high schools. Parrott Academy defeated South Lenoir in the sixth game of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library Quiz Bowl on March 7th to become the county champions for the fifth straight year. 

2019 Neuse News All-Area Football: Chargers' Webb, Hawks' Collins notch top awards

A record-setting turnaround, two state runner-up performances, a career-ending injury and many more storylines punctuated the 2019 high school football season. Winless a year ago, North Lenoir posted a program-best eight victories and returned to the playoffs with second-year head coach Jim Collins. Parrott Academy and Bethel Christian Academy each fell in their respective N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I and II 8-man football championship games. Michael Webb overcame a concussion to help lead Ayden-Grifton to its 19th consecutive postseason berth.
